How to clear interviews without prior experience.

You don't need 10 mock interviews. You need 1 honest portfolio, 3 sharp answers, and the guts to say “I don't know — let me find out.”

Step 1 · Win before the call — your portfolio

  • One pinned GitHub repo that actually runs. Not 30 half-finished projects. One working REST API, deployed, with a README that says: what it does · how to run · what you'd add next.
  • A Loom video walkthrough (2 minutes) embedded in the README. Founders watch it on 1.5x while sipping coffee — and decide whether to interview you.
  • A LinkedIn headline that says “Go backend developer — building [project name]” instead of “Fresher, immediate joiner”.
  • Use ChatGPT to rewrite your project descriptions in clear, recruiter-friendly English. Don't lie — just clean.

Step 2 · The 3 questions you WILL be asked

Q: Tell me about yourself.
A: Build a 60-second story: where you started · what you learned · what you've built · why you want this role. Memorise the spine, not the words. Rehearse 10 times in the mirror.
Q: Walk me through a project you've built.
A: Pick ONE project. Open the repo on screen-share. Walk through the architecture, then the hardest bug you fixed, then what you'd improve. Drawing on paper is allowed and impressive.
Q: Why should we hire you over someone with a degree?
A: Honest answer: "I'm not asking for the same package as them. I'm asking for a chance to deliver. Give me a 1-day paid task — if I don't deliver, don't hire me." Then back it up.

Step 3 · The mindset that closes the deal

  • • Be on time. Camera on. Plain background. Wired internet if possible.
  • • Say “I don't know — let me check” instead of bluffing. Bluffing is detected in 8 seconds.
  • • Always ask 2 questions at the end: “What does success look like in 90 days?” and “What is the biggest challenge in this role right now?”
  • • Follow up the same day with a 4-line thank-you message. Mention one specific thing they said. Founders remember.

Mistakes that kill 90% of fresh candidates

  • ✗ Applying to 200 jobs with the same CV. Apply to 20 with a custom 2-line intro each.
  • ✗ Memorising 100 leetcode problems but no project on GitHub.
  • ✗ Saying “I'm a quick learner”. So is everyone. Show the receipts.
  • ✗ Talking salary before the technical round closes.
  • ✗ Being defensive when given feedback. Treat feedback like a free interview prep session.

The same-day hire — my real story

My current US founder interviewed me on a Tuesday afternoon. I had no prior remote-work experience, no college degree, broken English. What I did have: one Go REST API project on GitHub, a 2-minute Loom video explaining it, and the courage to say “Give me a paid 1-day task — if I don't deliver, don't hire me.” He gave me the task. I delivered by 11 PM the same day. I started full-time the next morning. That's the whole secret.
